Fira (Φηρά, also Thira) is the capital of Santorini, a whitewashed town perched about 260 m up on the rim of the volcanic caldera. It is the island's hub for caldera-edge views over the Nea Kameni volcano and the Aegean, with a cable car, museums, shopping and nightlife all concentrated here. Following the intense earthquake swarm of early 2025, geological activity has been calm since May 2025 and tourism in 2026 is running normally. Expect heavy crowds at sunset and on cruise-ship days, so time your visit accordingly.

SafetyCliff edges and slick marble/cobble steps often lack railings — wear grippy shoes and take extra care near the edge at night or after drinking. The island is confirmed safe after the 2025 quakes, but note any local seismic advisories.
SeasonJune–September brings extreme heat and crowds, with the narrow lanes clogged on cruise days and at sunset. May and October (shoulder season) are far more comfortable for walking.
RulesCable-car tickets are sold only on-site (Old Port and Fira stations), with a separate luggage fee; cruise passengers pay a per-person disembarkation levy (high in peak summer). Confirm the latest fares and hours before you go.
MannersDress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) inside churches, and be considerate with photos and noise in the narrow residential lanes. For a prime sunset spot, arrive 30–60 minutes early.
CautionSome caldera-view restaurants and jewelry shops don't post prices and push hard — check the menu price first, agree taxi fares in advance (meters are often ignored), and know extra charges like the cable-car luggage fee.
MannersDonkey and mule rides up the Old Port steps are discouraged over animal-welfare concerns and a 100 kg rider weight limit — use the cable car or walk instead.
Practical info
Fira is the island's transport hub: the central KTEL bus terminal links Oia, Kamari, Perissa, the airport and Athinios ferry port. Cruise tenders land at the Old Port, from which the cable car climbs to Fira. Museums generally open in the morning and close mid-afternoon (some closed one day a week); always check the latest fares, opening hours and cable-car prices before visiting.
