Santa Claus Village (Joulupukin Pajakylä) is a theme and experience village sitting right on the Arctic Circle (66°33′N), about 8 km north of Rovaniemi and only 2 km from Rovaniemi Airport in Finnish Lapland. Opened in 1985 when Rovaniemi was named Santa's official hometown, it is famous for the marked Arctic Circle line you can literally step across, year-round meetings with Santa, and the official post office that stamps mail with a genuine Arctic Circle postmark. Entry to the village is free and only individual attractions are ticketed, and it wears two completely different faces: aurora and snow play in winter, the midnight sun and reindeer farms in summer. As of 2026 it operates normally and gets very crowded around the Christmas peak.

SeasonThe northern lights appear on roughly 150 nights from late August to early April on clear, dark nights, while in summer (June–July) the midnight sun keeps the sky lit and auroras cannot be seen. Choose your dates around your goal (aurora/snow vs. midnight sun and reindeer).
SeasonSnow activities such as sledding and snowmobiling only run in the snowy season, roughly December to March. Some experiences pause in the spring/autumn low season, so confirm each operator's availability before you go.
SafetyMidwinter can drop to -20 to -30°C and paths get icy and slippery. Layer up with waterproof winter clothing, ice grips for your shoes, gloves and a hat, and watch for frostbite and hypothermia. In summer, bring insect repellent for the mosquitoes.
RulesMeeting Santa is free, but taking your own photos of Santa is not allowed — only the official paid souvenir photo. Popular experiences like reindeer and husky sled rides sell out, especially in the December peak, so book online in advance.
MannersReindeer and huskies are living animals: don't touch or feed them without guidance, and avoid flash and loud noises when taking photos. Please keep to the queue at Santa's Office and other busy spots.
CautionFinland is very safe and pickpocketing is rare, but mind your belongings in crowded indoor venues and buses during peak season. Book tours and transfers through official operators (the official site or Visit Rovaniemi) and avoid unofficial touts or inflated taxi offers. The currency is the euro (EUR) and cards are widely accepted.
Practical info
From central Rovaniemi and the train station, local bus 8, Santa's Express and the Airport Express all stop at the village, which is only about 2 km from the airport (by car, 8 km up Road 4 toward Ivalo). Village entry is free and it is open all year, but the hours and prices of Santa's Office, the post office and the activity operators vary by season, so check the official site for the latest details before you go.
