🇩🇪 Sanssouci Palace

Schloss Sanssouci · 포츠담

Location

Overview

Sanssouci Palace is the Rococo summer residence that King Frederick the Great of Prussia had built in 1745-1747 on a terraced vineyard hill above Potsdam, designed by architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff in what became known as 'Frederician Rococo.' Its name is French for 'without a care,' reflecting the king's wish for a private retreat away from affairs of state. Famous for its curved vineyard terraces crowned by a single-storey palace, it was inscribed in 1990 (together with the surrounding grounds) on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the 'Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin.' As of 2026 it operates normally, with visits by timed-entry ticket.
