🇵🇹 Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte

Santuário do Bom Jesus do Monte · 브라가

Location

Overview

A hilltop pilgrimage sanctuary above Braga in northern Portugal, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Its heart is a monumental 573-step Baroque zigzag stairway (the Staircase of the Five Senses and the Staircase of the Virtues) crowned by a Neoclassical basilica, with the climb designed as a symbolic journey of purification and faith. A water-balanced funicular from 1882, the world's oldest still working on its original system, carries visitors up the slope.
