Sanbangsan is a roughly 395 m trachyte lava dome rising on the southwest coast of Jeju Island (Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo), a bell-shaped volcano with no summit crater, formed some 700,000 to 800,000 years ago. Partway up its southwest cliff sits Sanbanggulsa, a natural cave temple used for Buddhist worship since at least the Goryeo era and counted among Jeju's Ten Scenic Views. From the grotto mouth you look out over Hyeongjeseom, Gapado, Marado, and the Yongmeori Coast.

SafetyThe path to the cave is a steep flight of stairs that becomes slippery when wet from rain or humidity. Use the handrails and wear non-slip shoes.
SafetyThe cliffs have seen rockfall, especially in the spring thaw. Safety nets and hard hats are provided, but stay alert and obey any access-control notices.
MannersSanbanggulsa is an active place of worship. Keep quiet inside the shrine, dress modestly, and avoid disturbing praying visitors when taking photos.
RulesThe adjacent Yongmeori Coast is closed at high tide and in bad weather for safety. Call ahead (064-794-2940) to confirm it is open before you go.
SeasonThe stair climb has little shade and is hot in summer, while coastal winds are fierce in winter and during gales. Bring water, a hat, and a windbreaker.

Hours and admission vary by season, so confirm the latest before visiting (generally 09:00-18:00, shorter in winter). Tickets are sold for the grotto alone or as a combined pass with Yongmeori Coast, with free or discounted entry for Jeju residents, seniors, and young children.
