Overview
San Fruttuoso is a tiny bay between Camogli and Portofino reachable only by boat or on foot, tucked inside the Portofino Marine Protected Area (AMP) — one of the richest stretches of the Mediterranean. Its fame comes from the 'Cristo degli Abissi' (Christ of the Abyss), a bronze statue resting on the seabed at about 17 m, which has made the bay an icon for snorkelers and divers. On clear days the statue's outline is visible from the surface, ringed by shifting clouds of anchovies, schools of salema and dentex, and big groupers hiding in the rocks. As of 2026, frequent ferries run from Camogli and neighboring towns in the June–September high season, alongside small-group guided snorkel tours.

SafetyFerries, taxi-boats and private craft move constantly through the narrow bay. Surface snorkelers are hard to see — stay close to shore, tow a float or buoy, and don't drift away from your group.
SafetyThe statue sits on the seabed at about 17 m, so snorkeling means viewing it from the surface. Don't try to free-dive down to it without proper freediving training — shallow-water blackout and drowning are real risks.
SafetyThe Ligurian Sea sees frequent summer jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca) whose sting burns and stings for hours. Wear a rash guard, and beginners should avoid swimming alone and watch for mask fogging, panic, and cold over long sessions.
RulesThis is the Portofino Marine Protected Area. Snorkeling is free in Zones B and C, but Zone A bans all swimming and underwater activity, and night activity is generally prohibited. Never touch or stand on the statue or the Posidonia.
MannersDon't stand on or kick the Posidonia meadows, keep your distance from groupers and other wildlife, and never feed them. Reef-safe sunscreen is recommended.
SeasonJune to September is best, with water around 23–26°C and visibility of 8–15 m. The bay gets very crowded in peak season, and there is no road — access is only by boat or hiking trail.

San Fruttuoso has no road: reach it by ferry from Camogli (about 30 min), Portofino, Santa Margherita and other towns, or on foot via the trails from Portofino. Snorkel gear can be rented in Camogli, and operators like Outdoor Portofino run small-group tours with a marine biologist (typically June–September, subject to minimum numbers). Ferry timetables, tour prices and operating status shift with weather and season, so always confirm the latest details before visiting.
