Overview

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a fortified medieval hilltop village on the Côte d'Azur (French Riviera) in the Alpes-Maritimes, famous as an 'artists' village' whose 16th-century ramparts enclose narrow cobbled lanes packed with galleries. Marc Chagall lived here for nearly 20 years and is buried in the village cemetery, the legendary La Colombe d'Or hotel-restaurant hangs original works left by Picasso, Miró and Léger, and just outside the walls the Fondation Maeght is France's first independent modern-art foundation. For its 60th anniversary in 2024 the Fondation opened a roughly 500 m² underground extension that greatly enlarged its permanent display, and it is operating normally in 2026 — though parts of the historic rooms close briefly during the annual exhibition changeover (around mid-June in 2026). Wandering the village itself is free, but it gets very crowded in the summer high season, so an early-morning or late-afternoon visit is best.

Practical info

There is no train station, so from Nice allow about 1h10 by tram line 2 plus bus (line 9 or 620 to Cagnes-sur-Mer, then transfer to line 655), or take the A8 motorway to exit 47 or 48 by car. Paid car parks near the village fill up fast in high season, so try the free car park on Montée des Trieux opposite the Fondation Maeght; strolling the village is free, but hours and ticket prices for paid sites like the Fondation Maeght and the Folon Chapel change frequently, so verify the latest information on their official sites before visiting.
