Saebyeol Oreum is a roughly 519 m volcanic cone (oreum) in Bongseong-ri, Aewol-eup, in western Jeju, named for the way it stands alone like the morning star in the evening sky. Because it rises by itself from flat terrain, the summit offers an open 360-degree view over the cluster of western oreums and out to the sea. A round trip takes about 30 minutes, making it a favorite for travelers who want a short, quintessentially Jeju ridge walk without climbing Hallasan.
Silver grass (eoksae) blanketing the slopes around October, rippling in the wind — the site's signature autumn scene
A 360-degree panorama from the summit over the western oreum cluster and, on clear days, the sea
A renowned sunrise and sunset spot, with silver grass glowing against the evening sky
Two entrances (east and west) — the west side is steep and quick, letting you match the route to your fitness
The main stage of the annual Jeju Fire Festival, held around Saebyeol Oreum in early-to-mid March
Good to know
SeasonStanding alone on flat land, the cone catches strong wind that intensifies toward the summit. Bring windproof, warm layers and secure your hat, especially in the silver-grass season and winter.
SafetyIt is short but not trivial — some sections are steep. Deck paths and dirt trails get slippery after rain or in winter, so wear shoes with good grip.
RulesStay on the designated matted/deck trails to protect the grassland. Oreums are wildfire-sensitive: open flames and smoking are prohibited.
SafetyWatch for snakes and ticks in the grassy sections. If bringing a dog, keep it on a lead of 2 m or shorter, as required.
SeasonDuring the Fire Festival (planned March 9–14, 2026) expect traffic control, crowded parking, and possible trail restrictions. Events have been scaled back or cancelled in bad weather before, so check before you go.
Practical info
Free admission; large parking lot (busy on weekends, at sunrise/sunset, and during the festival). About 35 minutes by car from Jeju Airport; 20–30 minutes to the summit. Confirm fees, hours, and festival dates before visiting.
