Saas-Fee is a car-free mountain village in the Saas Valley of Valais, southern Switzerland, sitting on a high plateau at about 1,800 m and nicknamed the 'Pearl of the Alps.' It is ringed by 13 four-thousander peaks, including the Dom (4,545 m) — the highest concentration of 4,000 m summits in the Alps — and the Metro Alpin, the world's highest underground funicular, climbs to Mittelallalin (about 3,456 m), home to the world's highest revolving restaurant and the world's largest ice pavilion inside the Fee Glacier. In summer 2026 (18 July–31 October) the Allalin glacier opens for summer skiing, making Saas-Fee an ideal cool-weather escape for travelers who want glaciers, high viewpoints and clean alpine air.

SafetyMittelallalin is above 3,400 m, so it is cold, the UV is intense and the air is thin even in midsummer. Bring light layers, sunglasses, sunscreen and water, and take it easy if you feel altitude symptoms such as headache or dizziness.
SeasonSummer glacier skiing and the upper lifts run in the morning only (roughly from 7:00, closing in early afternoon as the snow softens), and Mittelallalin is closed during the spring/early-summer shoulder season (about late April to mid-July). Always check operating dates and times before you go.
RulesThe whole village is car-free. Leave your car in the multi-storey garage at the village entrance (about CHF 20/day) and continue by PostBus, electric hotel shuttle or electric taxi — you cannot drive into the village itself.
MannersThis is a quiet mountain village: stay on marked trails and keep noise down. Service is included in Swiss prices, so tipping is not obligatory — rounding up the bill if you were happy is plenty.
CautionSwitzerland is generally very safe, but watch for pickpockets at transfer stations like Visp and Brig and at busy gondola platforms. The SaastalCard guest card is issued only by your accommodation and is not available at the tourist office or anywhere else.
RulesThe Metro Alpin is NOT covered by the SaastalCard's free cable-car rides, so you pay for it separately. Prices in Switzerland are high, so carry both a card and some Swiss francs (CHF) in cash.
Practical info
The nearest railhead is Visp, reached by SBB train from Zurich or Geneva; from there a PostBus takes about 50 minutes to Saas-Fee. The village is car-free, so day visitors use the parking garage at the entrance. Mittelallalin and summer skiing operate 18 July–31 October 2026 (the winter season runs roughly December–April), and tickets are sold at the local Saastal Bergbahnen offices — always confirm the latest dates, hours and fares on the official website.
