Ryoan-ji is a Rinzai Zen temple in northwest Kyoto, founded in 1450 and registered in 1994 as part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto." It is world-famous for its kare-sansui (dry landscape) rock garden of 15 stones set in raked white gravel, arranged so that all 15 can never be seen at once from any single viewpoint. Beyond the rock garden, the grounds include the Kyoyochi Pond strolling garden, beautiful across all four seasons.
The kare-sansui rock garden in front of the Hojo (abbot's hall) — a minimalist Zen garden of roughly 15 stones and white gravel, meant for quiet, meditative viewing
The tsukubai (stone water basin) inscribed "ware tada taru o shiru" (I learn only to be content), said to have been donated by Tokugawa Mitsukuni of the Mito domain
The Kyoyochi (Mirror) Pond strolling garden — cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery, autumn foliage, and snowy winter scenes
The rebuilt Hojo architecture and the serene, historic atmosphere of a temple restored after the Onin War
Its location along the Kinukake-no-Michi path near Kinkaku-ji and Ninna-ji, ideal for a northwest Kyoto temple itinerary

SeasonCherry blossom season and autumn foliage (roughly mid-November to early December) draw heavy crowds — arrive right at opening for a calmer visit.
SeasonIn winter (Dec–Feb) hours are shorter (roughly 8:30–16:30) and the wooden floors are cold, so thick socks are helpful.
SafetyStone steps, garden paths, and wooden verandas can be slippery when wet from rain or snow, so wear comfortable, non-slip footwear.
