Location

Overview

Known as the "Mountains of the Moon," the Rwenzori range straddles the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and its highest point, Margherita Peak (5,109m), is Africa's third-highest summit after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Unlike those two, the Rwenzoris are fault-block mountains rather than volcanoes, and they are one of the few equatorial locations that still hold permanent snow and glaciers. The route passes through several distinct vegetation zones over a short distance β€” lowland rainforest, high-altitude bogs, and afro-alpine terrain covered in giant lobelias and senecios.
