Königsstuhl ('King's Chair') is the most famous chalk cliff of Rügen island in Germany's far northeast, rising about 118 m above the Baltic Sea within Jasmund National Park. The park's ancient beech forest was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, and the cliffs are immortalized in Caspar David Friedrich's Romantic painting 'Chalk Cliffs on Rügen.' Since April 2023 an elliptical suspended 'Skywalk' hovers over the cliff, so visitors now look down onto the rock and sea from above rather than standing on the edge. As of 2026 the National Park Centre and Skywalk operate normally and can be very crowded in the summer high season.

SafetyThe chalk cliffs erode and collapse easily. Stay strictly on marked paths and behind railings, and never approach the cliff edge or the beach directly below—rockfalls are a real hazard.
SeasonJuly–August is peak season and busiest from about 10:00 to 16:00; aim for early morning or late afternoon. From November to March hours are shorter (roughly 10:00–17:00) and the Baltic wind is bitterly cold.
RulesPrivate cars cannot drive to the centre for conservation reasons. Use the paid shuttle bus from the Hagen car park, or VVR bus 23 from Sassnitz (stop 'Königsstuhl'). Buying tickets online in advance is advisable in high season.
MannersVictoriasicht is tiny—only a few people fit at once, so queues form. Take your photos quickly and make room. In the national park forest, stay on trails and avoid picking plants or flying drones.
CautionOutright scams are rare here, but watch your belongings against pickpockets in the crowded viewpoint queues and on packed shuttle buses. Use only the official VVR bus or the centre shuttle, and be wary of anyone touting private rides or overpriced 'parking' assistance. Cards are widely accepted, but keep a little cash for small kiosks.
SafetyBring a windproof layer and non-slip shoes. Even on sunny days the exposed clifftop is windy with a low wind-chill, so dress in layers.
Practical info
Sassnitz on Rügen is the nearest hub: take VVR bus 23 from Sassnitz station/harbour directly to 'Königsstuhl,' or the shuttle bus (or a walk) from the Hagen car park about 3 km away. Cars cannot reach the centre, so park and switch to public transport. The Centre opens daily except 24 December with seasonal hours (roughly summer 9:00–19:00, spring/autumn 9:00–18:00, winter 10:00–17:00), and the Skywalk, exhibition and cinema are included in admission. Confirm current prices, hours, shuttle service and any online-booking requirement on the official site before you go.
