Location

Overview

The Royal Mile is the historic spine of Edinburgh's Old Town, a roughly one-Scots-mile (about 1.8 km) stretch running downhill from Edinburgh Castle at the top to the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the foot. It is made up of five linked streets β€” Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street, Canongate and Abbey Strand β€” and forms the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage medieval townscape. In August 2026 the world's largest arts festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (7–31 August), fills the street with performers and dense crowds, so choose August for the festival buzz or another month for a calmer walk. The street itself is free to explore, making it an ideal half-day of walking between ticketed castle, cathedral and palace.

Practical info

The Royal Mile is about a 5-minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley railway station; from the airport, take the tram or a bus to the city centre (St Andrew Square) and walk in. The street itself is free to walk, but individual sites such as the castle, palace and underground tours are mostly ticketed with timed entry β€” check current prices and opening hours on each site's official website.
