🇩🇪 Rothenburg ob der Tauber Old Town

Altstadt Rothenburg ob der Tauber · 로텐부르크

Location

Overview

Rothenburg ob der Tauber's Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval walled towns in Germany, perched above the Tauber Valley on the famous Romantic Road in Franconia, Bavaria. Its intact ring wall with 42 towers, cobbled lanes and half-timbered houses make it feel like a living medieval city. For 2026 the town is running its 'City. Landscape. Nature.' program of themed walks and special exhibitions linking the Old Town with the surrounding Tauber Valley. It is an easy day trip from Würzburg or Nuremberg, but the quiet early mornings and evenings after the tour buses leave are when the town is at its most magical.

Practical info

The easiest approach is by train via Würzburg or Ansbach, changing at Steinach for the short branch line to Rothenburg station, from which the Old Town is a short walk (by car, take A7 exit 108 and park outside the walls, as the Old Town is largely pedestrianized). The wall walk is free, while churches, museums and the Town Hall Tower each have their own admission and hours — always confirm current prices, opening times, and whether the Night Watchman tour and Romantic Road coach are running on the official website.
