Location

Overview

Riquewihr is a medieval walled village in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace, France, a flagship stop on the Alsace Wine Route and one of "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" (The Most Beautiful Villages of France). Having largely escaped the destruction of the Thirty Years' War and both World Wars, it preserves an unusually intact ensemble of 16th–17th-century timber-framed houses and a rare double ring of ramparts, earning it the nickname "the Pearl of the Vineyard." As of 2026 it remains one of Alsace's most visited villages after Strasbourg and Colmar, and its narrow cobbled lanes can get very crowded, to the point that managing over-tourism has become a local concern. Lying about 30 minutes by car from Colmar, it makes an easy day trip.
