🇬🇵 Cousteau Reserve (Pigeon Islands)

Réserve Cousteau, Îlets Pigeon · 프랑스령 과들루프 부이양트

Location

Overview

Off Malendure beach in Bouillante, on the leeward west coast of Basse-Terre, the Cousteau Reserve is a protected marine area that Jacques Cousteau himself praised, making it Guadeloupe's signature snorkeling and diving site. Around the two Pigeon Islands, the 'Coral Garden' (Jardin de Corail) massifs sit in just a few meters of water, crowded with staghorn and elkhorn corals, gorgonians and colorful parrotfish, angelfish and butterflyfish, while green and hawksbill turtles graze the seagrass beds right off the beach. Shallow zones of 2-3 m suit beginners, and in the dry season (December-May) visibility opens to 10-20 m. A bronze bust of Commander Cousteau rests on the sand at about 12 m, a famous landmark usually reached by divers and freedivers rather than surface snorkelers. As of 2026 it remains a core protected zone of the Guadeloupe National Park.

Practical info

The launch point is Malendure beach, known for its black volcanic sand, from which you cross roughly 1.5 km to the islets by kayak, glass-bottom boat or a guided snorkel tour (gear included, about 1.5-2 hours); self-guided snorkeling is possible via kayak rental. The best window is the dry season (Dec-May). Always confirm current prices, schedules, tour requirements and same-day sargassum/weather before heading out.
