Repulse Bay Beach (淺水灣) is a wide, roughly 300-metre stretch of golden sand on the southern coast of Hong Kong Island, only about 20–30 minutes by bus from Central. Its gentle gradient, shark-prevention nets and lifeguard cover make it one of the city's most family-friendly swimming beaches, while a colourful shrine at the eastern end—home to large Tin Hau (Goddess of the Sea) and Kwun Yam statues and the Longevity Bridge—lets you combine sightseeing with a beach day. Access to the beach is free.

SeasonThe official swimming season runs roughly April–October with set lifeguard hours (typically about 09:00–18:00 weekdays and 08:00–19:00 weekends/holidays). Confirm current dates and hours via LCSD before you go.
SafetyAlways check the flag signals: a plain red flag means swimming is unsafe (prohibited), and a blue-and-white flag showing a black shark fin means a shark has been reported nearby. Leave the water immediately if these are raised.
SeasonTyphoon season runs May–November (peaking in July and September). Beaches close or swimming is banned during typhoon (T3 and above) or rainstorm warnings, so check the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) before visiting.
MannersObserve shrine etiquette—by tradition you enter with your left foot and exit with your right, and offer fruit or vegetarian items rather than meat to Kwun Yam. Be discreet when photographing near incense, offerings or people at prayer.
SafetyThe beach gets very crowded on weekends, public holidays and in peak summer. Don't leave valuables unattended on the sand and keep an eye on your belongings while swimming.
CautionBuses use fixed fares paid by Octopus card or exact cash (no change given). If you take a taxi, insist on the meter, and you are not obliged to give large sums to vendors or donation requests near the shrine.

Getting there: from Exchange Square Bus Terminus in Central, take bus 6, 6A, 6X, 66 or 260 (toward Stanley), about 20–30 min, and alight at the Repulse Bay stop; an Octopus card is recommended. Both the beach and shrine are free to enter. Confirm the latest season, hours and fares via LCSD and local signage.
