🇫🇯 Rainbow Reef (Somosomo Strait)

Location

Overview

Straddling the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu, Rainbow Reef is the South Pacific's showpiece for snorkeling and diving, widely called the 'soft coral capital of the world.' Strong tidal currents funnel nutrient-rich water through the channel, feeding a riot of pink, orange and purple soft corals — and when the tide turns, the reef seems to bloom in minutes. On the shallow reef tops (roughly 2–8 m) snorkelers can drift over coral gardens, dense schools of tropical fish and cruising sea turtles, with visibility opening up to 15–30 m and beyond during the April–October dry season. As of 2026, resorts and dive shops on Taveuni run boat snorkel trips here regularly.
