The Citadel of Qaitbay is a 15th-century Mamluk fortress guarding the entrance to Alexandria's Eastern Harbour, built between 1477 and 1479 by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay. It famously stands on the exact site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria (the Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, reusing some of the lighthouse's fallen stone. Today it operates as a heritage site and naval museum and remains one of Alexandria's most photographed landmarks, with sweeping Mediterranean views. As of 2026 it is open year-round on electronic tickets, with evening sound-and-light shows offered in the summer season.

The citadel sits at the tip of the Eastern Harbour on the Corniche, about a 15-minute taxi ride from Alexandria's Misr (main) railway station; the city has no metro, so use a taxi, Uber/Careem, or the historic tram. Summer 2026 hours are roughly 09:00–20:00 (last tickets/entry around 19:00), with foreign admission around 200 EGP — always confirm the latest hours and prices before visiting.
