Location

Overview

Pulau Tenggol is a small 3-by-2 km island roughly 14 nautical miles (26 km) off Kuala Dungun on Malaysia's east coast, in Terengganu. What makes it a freediving destination rather than just another reef stop is the bathymetry: the bottom drops away quickly close to shore, and submerged pinnacles run down toward the 40 m range within easy boat reach, so deep lines can be set without a long crossing. Water sits at 28-30Β°C year-round, visibility typically runs 10-20 m and opens to around 20 m on good days, which is why Malaysian schools use Tenggol for line training and for the depth sessions on Level 2-3 and instructor courses. As of 2026 the island still shuts completely for the northeast monsoon from November through February and operates only from March to October, with resort or school packages effectively the only way in.

Practical info

Fly into Kuala Lumpur or Kuala Terengganu, travel overland to the Kuala Dungun jetty, then take a speedboat of about 45 minutes (fishing boats take roughly two hours). Day-tripping on your own is not really possible - the island runs on advance packages, and freediving is usually done by joining a local school's trip - so check opening dates, boat schedules, required certification, prices and the conservation charge directly with the operator and the marine park notices before you book, as these shift from season to season.
