Pulau Redang is the largest of the nine islands that make up Redang Marine Park, lying about 45 km off the coast of Terengganu on Malaysia's east coast. With some 500 coral species, roughly 3,000 fish species, sea turtles, crystal-clear water and powdery white beaches, it is one of Peninsular Malaysia's premier snorkeling and diving destinations. Most visitors stay on resort packages, with Pasir Panjang (Long Beach) serving as the main hub for accommodation and dining.

RulesThis is a protected marine park: do not stand on or touch coral, and do not collect or remove shells, coral or marine life (heavy fines apply for damage). Swim fins are banned by the Marine Park Authority to protect the reef, so they are not even available to rent.
MannersTerengganu is a conservative Muslim state. Swimwear is fine on resort beaches, but cover shoulders and knees in towns and villages (e.g., Kuala Terengganu markets). Keep alcohol discreet and out of public view, and avoid commenting on local Muslim women's headscarves (tudung) or unnecessary physical contact.
SeasonThe island effectively shuts down during the Northeast Monsoon from November to February due to rough seas. Some resorts close from mid-October and reopen around February, and boat services are suspended. The snorkeling window is March to October (peak diving June to August). Confirm current operating and weather conditions before booking.
SafetyThe sun is intense and stinging marine life such as jellyfish may be present, so wear a rash guard to cover skin and apply sun protection. Reef or water shoes prevent cuts from broken coral exposed at low tide. Bring a flashlight for night walks, and wear a life vest where there are currents.
CautionDay-trip and budget packages often exclude the marine park conservation fee (around RM30 for foreign adults) and life-vest rental (about RM10), so confirm exactly what is included before booking. Snorkel sites get very crowded with tour groups on peak-season mornings. Re-check prices and inclusions at the time of booking.
RulesThere are no banks or ATMs on Redang or near Merang jetty. Withdraw all the cash you need in Kuala Terengganu town before heading over.
Practical info
Getting there: Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu is about a 1-hour flight, then roughly 30-45 minutes by road to Merang or Shahbandar jetty, followed by a 30-90 minute boat transfer. Conservation fee is around RM30 for foreign adults (RM15 children/seniors); verify fees, times and rules before you go. Carry cash, and pack a rash guard against strong sun and jellyfish.
