Praia da Marinha is a limestone-cliff beach in Lagoa on Portugal's southern Algarve coast, regularly ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Europe. It is famous for wind- and wave-carved natural arches and pillars, including a heart-shaped double arch locals call 'the Heart of the Algarve,' and its clear emerald water is excellent for swimming and snorkelling. Sheltered by the cliffs, the water is usually calm, making it popular with families.

SafetyThe only beach access is a steep wooden staircase of roughly 150 steps down the cliff. Wear grippy shoes; it is very difficult for strollers, wheelchairs and anyone with reduced mobility.
SafetyThere is a rockfall risk, so don't set up directly beneath the cliffs for shade — keep a safe distance. The cliffs here have collapsed in the past.
SeasonAt high tide a large part of the sand is submerged and the beach becomes cramped. Check tide times and aim for low tide.
SeasonLifeguards are typically on duty only during the bathing season (June–September, roughly 10am–7pm). Outside that window there is no supervision, so swim with caution.
RulesAt nearby Benagil Cave, rules tightened in September 2023: swimming into the cave and landing inside are prohibited. Violations can incur fines (check the current limits).
CautionUnlicensed sellers in Albufeira and Portimão push 'Benagil tours' that may not actually enter the cave or may operate illegally. Book only with properly licensed operators.
Practical info
Reachable by car only (from the N125, follow signs near the Lagoa International School). The free clifftop car park holds only about 32 vehicles and fills within an hour or two after sunrise in summer; when full, police close the access road. Arrive early morning. Facilities are limited to toilets near the car park and a seasonal snack bar, so bring water, snacks and sun protection. Confirm any fees, hours and rules before you go.
