Overview
Porto de Galinhas, an old fishing village on the coast of Pernambuco in northeast Brazil, is home to the country's most famous natural pools (piscinas naturais). At low tide the coral reef just off the main beach traps warm, crystal-clear water in shallow pools that you reach aboard a jangada, the region's traditional sailing raft. The water is mostly knee- to waist-deep and a warm 26–28°C year-round, with visibility of roughly 5–15 m on clear days. You snorkel over colorful reef fish such as surgeonfish and pufferfish, plus moray eels and octopus, and between December and April sea turtles sometimes drift through — an easy, family-friendly spot that is ideal for first-time snorkelers.

Good to know
SeasonThe pools only form at low tide, and on days with unfavorable tides there are no tours at all — about ten days a month. Check the day's tide table before you go (0.0–0.5 m or lower is ideal) and aim for the early morning, when the water is calmest and clearest.
SafetyIt looks calm and shallow, but stay inside the marked pool area. Beyond the reef edge the currents are stronger and can pull you toward open sea, so don't swim out alone or past the buoys.
SafetyThe reef is easy to scrape or cut yourself on, and fire coral (coral-de-fogo) and sea urchins can sting or spike you. Wear reef shoes, watch where you put your feet, and never stand on the coral.
SafetyThe equatorial sun is intense. Floating face-down for a long time leads to severe sunburn before you notice it — cover up with a rash guard and hat and use reef-safe sunscreen.
RulesThis is an environmental protection area (APA). Don't touch or step on coral or marine life, use biodegradable reef-safe sunscreen free of oxybenzone, and stay within the designated area.
MannersDon't feed the fish, and keep your distance from sea turtles — never chase or touch them. When everyone stands on the coral, the reef dies.
CautionWatch for unlicensed touts and inflated prices. Buy jangada tickets from the official Jangadeiros Association (Associação dos Jangadeiros) booth at the end of Rua das Piscinas Naturais, and expect fares to change, so confirm the current price on the day.
Practical info
It's about an hour's drive (60 km) from Recife International Airport, and the jangadas leave from the main beach in the center of Porto de Galinhas. Tours run only during the low-tide window (the September–March dry season offers the best visibility), and because fares, hours and tides all vary, confirm the current tide table and prices at the association booth on the day of your visit.
