Ponta da Piedade is a headland just south of Lagos in Portugal's Algarve, its name meaning "Point of Mercy" for the fishing families who once prayed here for loved ones at sea during storms. It is celebrated as one of the Algarve's finest stretches of coast, where golden limestone cliffs up to about 20 metres high frame sea caves, natural arches, and towering rock stacks. SafetyCliff edges are unfenced and the soft limestone can crumble without warning. Stay at least 2 metres back from any drop and never climb onto overhangs for a photo.
SafetyThe steps down to the boats are steep and can be slippery. Wear shoes with good grip; flip-flops slide on dry dust and sand.
SeasonIt is busiest from 9am to 4pm in peak season (July–August). Early morning (7–9am) and the hour before sunset are quietest, and spring/autumn (April, May, October) mean fewer crowds and lower prices.
SafetySwimming near the landing stage is not advised due to heavy boat traffic and currents. Avoid the clifftop trail in strong winds and keep children on the inland side of the path.
CautionBoats at the landing and marina often tout for passengers with no fixed timetable. Confirm price and duration before boarding, and prefer a reputable operator (verify current rates).
Practical info
Entry is free and the site is open around the clock. Road restrictions mean you cannot drive right up to the lighthouse; park at Praia do Camilo (fills fast between 10am–3pm in summer). Public transport drops you near Praia Dona Ana (e.g. Onda Line 2), a roughly 20-minute walk away. Boat tours run about 30–90 minutes for roughly €18–30; confirm current prices, times, and operations.
