🇱🇰 Pigeon Island National Park

පරෙවි දූපත (Pigeon Island) · 스리랑카 트린코말리 (닐라벨리)

Location

Overview

Pigeon Island National Park is one of only two marine national parks in Sri Lanka and protects some of the country's best-surviving coral reef. It's a 15–20 minute boat ride from Nilaveli (or Uppuveli) beach, and because you can wade in from the sand and float straight over the coral garden, it's a favorite for beginners. In warm (27–30°C), clear water 1–5 m deep with 10–20 m visibility, you can meet 100+ species of coral, 300+ reef fish, gentle blacktip reef sharks and green sea turtles. Be aware, though, that over-tourism has damaged the coral on one side of the island in recent years, so visitor caps and roped-off restoration zones are now in place.

Practical info

It's a 15–20 minute boat ride from Nilaveli (or Uppuveli) beach, usually booked as a tour that bundles the national park entry fee, boat and gear. The island is generally open roughly 8am–5pm, the best season is May–October, and mornings are ideal. Entry fees, prices and hours change, so always confirm the latest details before visiting.
