🇮🇹 Piazza del Campo (Siena)

Siena, Piazza del Campo · 시에나

Location

Overview

Piazza del Campo is the shell-shaped main square at the heart of Siena's old town in Tuscany, widely regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares. Its sloping red-brick pavement is divided by white travertine lines into nine sections that fan toward the town hall (Palazzo Pubblico), symbolizing the medieval Council of Nine that ruled Siena at its height. It anchors the Historic Centre of Siena, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, and the square itself is free to enter.

Practical info

The square is free and always open. The Torre del Mangia and the Palazzo Pubblico civic museum are ticketed (roughly €10 museum, €14 tower, ~€24 combined — confirm the latest prices), and tower tickets are sold only at the on-site office. Siena's old town is a restricted-traffic (ZTL) zone, so expect to explore on foot and wear comfortable shoes.
