A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Quảng Bình Province, central Vietnam, this national park protects one of Southeast Asia's finest complex karst landscapes and more than 300 caves. SeasonSeptember to November is flood season, with the biggest floods in mid-September and October. Rising Son River levels suspend Phong Nha Cave boat tours and can close some adventure caves and trails, so verify current conditions before you go.
SeasonThe dry season (November-April, especially March-April) is ideal. Summer (May-August) can hit around 40C with high humidity, but caves stay near 20C inside, so bring a light layer.
RulesFees, opening hours and tour rules change often, so confirm the latest before visiting. As a rough guide, recent rates: Paradise Cave ~270,000 VND (adult), Phong Nha Cave ~150,000 VND plus a separate boat fee, Dark Cave full package ~450,000 VND.
MannersFor Dark Cave's mud bath and swim, avoid white clothing (mud stains) and bring water shoes, a rash guard/swimsuit and a change of clothes. A waterproof pouch to protect your phone and camera is strongly advised.
CautionGetting from Đồng Hới station/airport to Phong Nha, watch for rigged meters and note-swapping (the blue 500,000 VND and 20,000 VND notes look alike). Pay with small bills, and use a reputable taxi firm or the Grab app.
CautionThe village has knockoff businesses copying famous names (e.g. two spots called 'The Pub with Cold Beer'). Cross-check Google Maps and social media to find the genuine one.
Practical info
Đồng Hới (about 40 km away) is the gateway: ~8-10 hrs by train from Hanoi, ~2.5-3.5 hrs from Hue, and there's a Đồng Hới airport. From Đồng Hới, reach Phong Nha by local bus (~35,000 VND), taxi (~400,000 VND, about 1 hr) or private car. Confirm prices and times before travel.
