Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) is a 396-meter granite monolith rising at the mouth of Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro, inscribed in 2012 as part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea.' Named for its resemblance to a conical loaf of refined sugar, it is reached by the Bondinho cable car, which opened in 1912 as Brazil's first and the world's third aerial cableway and is an attraction in its own right. Riders ascend in two stages from the Praia Vermelha base station via Morro da Urca (220 m) to the summit (396 m), where a 360-degree panorama takes in Guanabara Bay, Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado, Copacabana, and the Atlantic. In 2026 it remains one of Rio's signature viewpoints, and visiting around sunset is especially popular.

SafetyThe Urca neighborhood at the base is one of Rio's calmest and safest areas, but pickpocketing and phone-snatching are common on the routes to it, at Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, and on the metro. Don't walk with your phone in hand, and use Uber or 99 for travel after dark.
CautionRideshare fares surge 2-3x around sunset and rush hour. Check the in-app price before you go, and avoid unofficial taxis or touts offering rides without a meter.
RulesTickets are round-trip only (no one-way) and bags are screened at the entrance. Book on the official site (bondinho.com.br); weekend and sunset slots can sell out weeks ahead, so reserve early (verify current prices and hours).
SeasonThe cable car is suspended during heavy rain, lightning, or high winds, with refunds or free rebooking offered. In the Southern Hemisphere winter (June-August) sunset comes early (around 5:15-5:45 pm); the December-February summer is hot, humid, and the busiest peak season.
MannersThe summit is windy and cool, so bring a light windbreaker. Sunset viewpoints get very crowded, so avoid monopolizing spots with tripods or long stays and keep to the queue.
SafetyUse the free Cláudio Coutinho trail and the walking route up Morro da Urca in daylight, and avoid hiking alone at dawn or after dark when few people are around.

The lower station is at Praia Vermelha in Urca; the nearest metro is Botafogo (about 2.5 km away), connected onward by buses 107/512/513, taxi, or rideshare. It generally operates daily from around 08:00 to 20:00 (extended in peak season) with last boarding before closing, and fares vary by nationality, residency, and time slot (e.g. roughly R$199 for a foreign adult), so always confirm the latest hours and prices on the official website.
