🇼🇸 Palolo Deep Marine Reserve

Palolo Deep Marine Reserve · 사모아 우폴루 아피아 바이알라 비치

Location

Overview

Palolo Deep Marine Reserve is a protected reef lagoon a short walk from central Apia at Vaiala Beach, and one of Samoa's oldest marine reserves (protected since the 1970s). Snorkel out across the shallow coral flat for about 100m to a white buoy, and the seabed drops away into a bowl-shaped blue hole known as 'the Deep,' where staghorn coral, colourful reef fish and starfish gather along the rim, with the occasional octopus or turtle. The reef flat sits at roughly 1-8m with 10-20m visibility, making it beginner-friendly, though the trench itself is deep and can carry current. As of 2026 it remains a managed reserve with an entry fee and daytime hours (roughly 8am-6pm).

Good to know

Practical info

It's about a 5-minute walk east from central Apia to Vaiala Beach, with a straightforward beach entry (no boat required). Expect a small entry fee plus gear hire for a mask and snorkel, and roughly 8am-6pm opening, though it can close early in poor weather or tides. Confirm current fees, hours and tide times before you go.
