The Otaru Canal is a roughly 1,140 m waterway completed in 1923, when Otaru was northern Japan's leading trading port and the canal was used to ferry cargo between ships and warehouses. Saved by a citizens' preservation movement, it was revived in the 1980s as a walking promenade, and the stone warehouses lining it now house cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops. At dusk its 63 gas lamps flicker on, casting a warm glow over the water and the brick-and-stone warehouses that has made it Otaru's signature nightscape.

SeasonIn winter (Dec-Feb) the promenade and stone paving get icy and slippery; wear waterproof, non-slip footwear and warm layers.
SeasonFebruary temperatures in Otaru often drop below freezing, so bring gloves and a hat if you plan to view the Snow Light Path Festival at night.
SafetySome stretches of the canal-side path have low or no railings; do not step too close to the water's edge while focused on taking photos.
RulesCanal cruises can be cancelled at short notice due to bad weather, and you must gather at the ticket center (next to Chuo Bridge) 15 minutes before departure. Peak-season and night sailings sell out, so booking ahead is safer.
MannersThe main photo spots are crowded and the walkway is narrow. Avoid blocking the path with tripods or long shoots, and give way to other pedestrians and traffic.
Practical info
The canal promenade is free and open 24 hours, with the gas lamps lit from around sunset into the night (varies by section; check current times). The cruise runs about 35-40 minutes, costing roughly 1,800 yen (day) / 2,000 yen (night) for adults and 500 yen for children; book ahead as same-day tickets can sell out (confirm current fares and operation). About an 8-10 minute walk from JR Otaru Station.
