Osu Kannon (formally Kitanosan Shinpukuji Hoshoin) is a Shingon Buddhist temple in Naka Ward, Nagoya, counted among Japan's three great Kannon temples. First built in the 14th century in what is now Gifu, it was relocated to its current Nagoya site in 1612 by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu; destroyed in the 1945 air raid, the vivid red main hall was rebuilt in 1970. Beneath the hall, the Shinpukuji Library holds over 15,000 classic Japanese and Chinese texts, including the oldest surviving manuscript of the Kojiki.

MannersThis is a Shingon temple: worship quietly with palms pressed together (gassho). Avoid photographing the Buddhist statues inside the halls, and even outdoors watch for posted signs and don't capture other worshippers.
SeasonOn the 18th and 28th each month (antique market and festival days) the grounds and arcade get very crowded. Skip these dates if you want a quiet visit.
RulesAt Setsubun in early February, because Osu Kannon enshrines demon (oni) masks as treasures, worshippers do NOT shout 'oni wa soto' (demons out) during the bean-throwing. Follow the local custom.
SafetyThe pigeons are tame and swarm when fed; netting covers the eaves for this reason. Keep your distance if droppings, hygiene or allergies are a concern.
CautionAt the antique market prices are often not fixed and authenticity varies. Judge value yourself and negotiate or verify before buying anything expensive.
