It runs the full range from luxury flagships to high-street brands like H&M and Uniqlo, plus budget centres such as Lucky Plaza and Far East Plaza, earning it the nickname 'Singapore's Fifth Avenue.' Beyond retail there are cinemas, galleries and the Peranakan shophouses of Emerald Hill, making it a pleasant urban stroll too.

CautionSome electronics and souvenir shops, notably in Lucky Plaza, are notorious for cheating tourists. Reported tactics include swapping in cheaper goods, charging bogus fees such as 'unlocking' costs for standard features, and refusing to void a card payment. Buy electronics from large fixed-price chains like Harvey Norman, Best Denki or Courts, and confirm the final price in writing before paying.
CautionA 'Duty-Free' sign is no guarantee — some shops sell at standard or inflated prices under that label, so compare before you buy. Tourists are sometimes quoted higher prices than locals, so outside fixed-price stores always lock in the price before payment.
RulesSingapore enforces fines strictly. Selling or importing chewing gum is banned, littering can cost up to about S$1,000, smoking is prohibited in most indoor and non-designated areas (including malls, MRT and taxis) with fines up to about S$1,000, and jaywalking can bring roughly S$50-250 (verify current amounts).
SafetyOrchard Road is generally very safe, well-lit and busy even at night, but the nightlife cluster around Orchard Towers can attract touts and late-night trouble, so avoid walking there alone in the small hours.
MannersTipping is not customary in Singapore. Taxis and restaurants do not expect tips, and a service charge is usually already added to the bill. Rounding up small change is welcomed as a gesture but never required.
SeasonThe tropical climate is hot and humid year-round with frequent sudden downpours. Keep outdoor stints short, use the air-conditioned malls and underground links between them, and carry water and an umbrella.
Practical info
Orchard MRT (NS22/TE14) sits directly under ION Orchard and is the handiest entry; Somerset (NS23) and Dhoby Ghaut stations are also adjacent. Most malls open roughly 10:00-22:00 and extend hours during Christmas, Chinese New Year and the Great Singapore Sale (usually June-July). Weekday mornings are least crowded. Confirm fees, hours and event dates via official channels before visiting.
