Omotesando is a roughly 1.1 km zelkova-lined boulevard that was laid out in 1919 as the approach to Meiji Jingu shrine and is now one of Tokyo's premier luxury and architecture streets. Often called Tokyo's Champs-Elysees, it runs from Aoyama-dori toward Harajuku and is packed with architect-designed flagships from Louis Vuitton, Prada, Dior and more. Walking the avenue is free, and it pairs well with the backstreet Cat Street and the nearby Nezu Museum.
Cat Street (Ura-Harajuku) — the vintage and streetwear backstreet linking Omotesando toward Shibuya
Nezu Museum — East Asian antiquities and a large traditional Japanese garden in the city (separate admission)
Good to know
CautionNear the Meiji Jingu exit and Harajuku Station, watch for touts luring you into bars/clubs claiming 'free entry' or a 'flat rate.' Drink and companion fees can pile up to tens of thousands of yen — don't follow them.
CautionReported around Harajuku Station: people posing as 'art students' who invite you to a gallery and hard-sell overpriced prints, and others offering a 'blessing' then demanding money. Politely decline and walk away.
SeasonThe winter illumination (roughly early Dec to early Jan, around 17:00-22:00) and weekends/holidays draw huge crowds. Exact dates and hours change yearly — verify the latest before you go.
MannersThis is a formal shrine-approach avenue lined with luxury boutiques. Avoid unauthorized photography inside shops, and don't block narrow sidewalks or crossings while taking photos.
RulesPublic bins are scarce, so carry your trash out. Eating while walking is discouraged, and shop/venue rules and opening hours should be confirmed fresh before visiting.
Practical info
Reach it via Omotesando Station (Ginza, Hanzomon, Chiyoda lines) or a 2-10 minute walk from Harajuku / Meiji-jingumae stations. Strolling the avenue is free; weekday mornings (10-11 AM) are the calmest. For individual venues like the Nezu Museum, confirm current fees, closing days and reservations on the official site before visiting.
