Oirase Gorge is a roughly 14 km mountain stream flowing from Lake Towada in Towada City, Aomori, designated as a national Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument within Towada-Hachimantai National Park. A gentle riverside trail winds past mossy forest, rapids, and more than a dozen waterfalls, offering a different scene each season. Fresh green from late spring to early summer and the autumn foliage of late October to early November are considered the finest times.
Choshi-Otaki, the only waterfall fed by the main stream, plus falls like Kumoi-no-taki punctuate the gorge with cascades of all sizes.
Named rapids such as Ashura-no-nagare and Sanran-no-nagare are signature, photogenic viewpoints along the stream.
Home to around 300 species of moss, it is counted among Japan's great 'moss forests,' making the green trail itself a highlight.
The Ishigedo-to-Nenokuchi section is nearly flat and beginner-friendly; walking the whole trail takes about 4-5 hours.
Autumn colors (late Oct-early Nov) and fresh greenery (late spring-early summer) are the marquee seasons, each giving a wholly different impression.

SafetyThe walking trail runs alongside National Route 102 and in places merges with or spills onto the road, so stay alert to vehicle traffic, especially near roadside sections.
SafetyThe area is Asiatic black bear habitat and sightings are increasing. No visitor attacks have been reported on the main daytime routes, but a bear bell and making noise are sensible precautions.
SafetyCliffs line the gorge, so watch for falling rocks (and acorns in autumn). Paths turn muddy and slippery after rain, so non-slip trekking shoes are recommended.
RulesAs a protected Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, collecting anything, including fallen leaves, branches, stones, and moss, is strictly prohibited. Stay on the designated trail at all times.
SeasonIn winter (roughly late December to mid-April, into Golden Week in heavy-snow years) the trail is closed by snow, and buses do not run from about mid-November to March. Confirm current status before you go.
MannersThe forest has many insects, so wear long sleeves and long pants with repellent; avoid strong perfume and black clothing to reduce wasp encounters, and keep noise low to respect the natural setting.
Practical info
Entry is free. Access via JR Bus (Towada Lake line) from Shin-Aomori Station (~165 min) or Hachinohe Station (~135 min); confirm current timetables. During peak periods, private-vehicle traffic restrictions are applied to protect the environment (2026 restriction planned for Sept 7-13; verify latest). Bring comfortable walking shoes, rain gear, and water.
