🇩🇪 Nuremberg Hauptmarkt

Hauptmarkt Nuernberg (Schoener Brunnen) · 뉘른베르크

Location

Overview

Hauptmarkt is the central square of Nuremberg's old town and has been the stage of civic life since the city's days as a medieval Imperial Free City. It is framed by the roughly 19-metre-tall Gothic spire fountain 'Schöner Brunnen' (completed 1396) and the Frauenkirche, whose 1509 'Männleinlaufen' mechanical clock sends seven prince-electors past Emperor Charles IV every day at noon. As of 2026 the square still hosts Nuremberg's largest weekly market Monday to Saturday, and from late November it becomes home to the world-famous Christkindlesmarkt Christmas market. The square itself is always free to wander, making it a natural starting point for exploring the historic centre on foot.

Practical info

It is about a 15-minute walk from Nuremberg Central Station, or roughly 5 minutes on foot from U-Bahn line U1 Lorenzkirche. The old town is largely pedestrianised so it is easy to reach on foot; the square and fountain are free to view, while Frauenkirche opening times and Christmas-market details and prices should be checked on official sites before your visit for the latest information.
