The North Cape (Nordkapp) is a 307-metre cliff plateau on the island of Magerøya in Finnmark, Norway's far north, long marketed as the northernmost point of mainland Europe. Its steel globe monument perched above the Arctic Ocean and the Nordkapphallen visitor centre are the icons of the site, famous for the midnight sun (roughly mid-May to late July) and for winter's polar night and northern lights. As of 2026, a County Governor (statsforvalter) ruling made access to the open-air plateau free of charge (the indoor visitor centre still requires a paid ticket), and travellers come year-round for the symbolic pilgrimage to the 'edge of Europe.' Note that, strictly speaking, neighbouring Knivskjellodden reaches about 1.4 km further north, so 'northernmost mainland' is a symbolic label.

SeasonSummer's midnight sun (roughly mid-May to late July) and winter's polar night (roughly late November to late January) are entirely different experiences. Plan for winter if you want the aurora, or summer if you want the midnight sun.
SafetyThe plateau is extremely windy and cold, even in summer. Pack windproof, waterproof layers plus a hat and gloves — near-winter clothing is advisable in any season.
SafetyIn winter the E69 between the Skarsvåg junction and the plateau runs on scheduled convoy driving (kolonnekjøring), and the road and centre may close in bad weather. If you rent a car and lack winter-driving experience, do not push it — check traffic updates at vegvesen.no. Watch for reindeer on the road in summer.
RulesThanks to the 2026 ruling, entering the outdoor plateau itself is free, but the indoor Nordkapphallen (exhibitions, film, chapel) still requires a paid ticket. Confirm current prices and ticket validity before you go.
MannersThis is a nature area under Norway's 'right to roam' (friluftsloven). Stay on marked paths, carry out all litter, do not damage the cliff edge or monument, and enjoy the landscape quietly.
CautionThe site was long criticised for a 'rip-off' entrance fee; be aware the open-air plateau is now free. Some local tours or parking packages may be overpriced, so check official rates before booking.
Practical info
Fly from Tromsø or Alta to Honningsvåg (Valan Airport), then continue about 33 km north by rental car or bus; alternatively arrive via Hurtigruten or Havila coastal ships. The E69 reaches Magerøya through the North Cape subsea tunnel. Nordkapphallen operates year-round (restaurant 1 June–31 Aug, coffee house all year) but can close in bad weather, so confirm opening hours and ticket prices on the official site before visiting.
