Neuschwanstein is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace begun in 1869 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, perched on a rugged hill near Füssen in the Bavarian Alps. Inspired by Wagner's operas and medieval legend, it later became the model for Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle. In July 2025 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with three other Ludwig II palaces (Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and Schachen), raising its profile even further. The lavish interior can only be seen on a timed guided tour, so book ahead and pair the visit with the classic view from Marienbrücke.

RulesThe interior is accessible only via a fixed-time guided tour; online booking on the official site is essential and slots sell out weeks ahead in high season (May–Sep) and at the holidays. Arrive on time or you forfeit entry.
SeasonMarienbrücke, the best viewpoint, is frequently closed in winter or during ice, snow or high winds — check its status before you go.
SafetyIt is a steep 30–40 minute walk uphill from the village; wear non-slip shoes, bring water, and take care on the narrow, crowded bridge.
MannersPhotography and video are not allowed inside the castle; move quietly and follow your guide during the tour.

Practical info
From Munich Hauptbahnhof take the train to Füssen (about 2 hours), then bus 73 or 78 to the 'Hohenschwangau / Neuschwanstein Castles' stop (about 10 min); from there it is a 30–40 min uphill walk or a shuttle bus / horse-drawn carriage. Summer hours (28 Mar–15 Oct) are 8:00–16:00 and winter (from 16 Oct) 8:00–15:30, closed 24/25/31 Dec and 1 Jan — always confirm the latest prices and hours before visiting.
