Praia do Norte (North Beach) in the fishing town of Nazaré on Portugal's west coast is famous for the world's biggest surfed waves. The underwater Nazaré Canyon amplifies Atlantic swells, producing towering 20–30 m waves in winter. It was the stage for the 2020 Guinness World Record for the largest wave surfed (around 26 m), and most visitors come not to surf but to watch the spectacle from the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo (lighthouse) viewpoint atop the Sítio headland.

SafetyPraia do Norte is extremely dangerous: powerful rip currents and sudden large waves have drowned tourists in the past. Even if you go down to the sand, never approach the water's edge; watch the waves from the lighthouse viewpoint instead.
SeasonThe giant waves only appear during the Atlantic swell season (October–March, peaking December–February) and vary greatly with weather and swell. Bigger swells often bring strong wind and mist, so dress warm and windproof and check the surf forecast.
RulesThe Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo (lighthouse) charges a small entry fee (last entry ~30 min before closing) and its opening hours change by season. Confirm the latest hours and price before you go.
SafetyParts of the viewpoint and cliff edge have no railings and are especially hazardous in high winds. Don't stand near the edge for photos, and keep close watch on children.
MannersParking at Sítio is very limited; during big-swell events or peak season it's best to park in the lower town or port and take the funicular up. Check current parking and restroom conditions locally.
CautionWatch for pickpockets in peak-season crowds, and be wary of unofficial touts offering 'forecast tours' or parking spots without proper signage.
