The National Monument (Monas) is a roughly 132-meter obelisk rising from Merdeka Square in Central Jakarta, built to commemorate Indonesia's struggle for independence. Commissioned by founding President Sukarno, construction began in 1961 and it opened to the public in 1975, crowned by a gold-leaf 'flame' symbolizing the nation's fighting spirit. It houses an underground history museum, a Hall of Independence, and an observation deck at about 115 meters offering sweeping views over the capital.

Practical info
Generally open Tue–Sun (closed Mondays and the last Friday of each month); the tower opens in the morning with ticket sales closing mid-afternoon. Get there via MRT Bundaran HI, TransJakarta Halte Monas (Corridor 1), or KRL Juanda; taxis and ride-hail drop off at the IRTI Monas gate. Entry is through a single underground tunnel on the north side—allow about 1.5–2 hours. Verify current fees, hours, and closures before you go.
