The National 5Β·18 Democratic Cemetery honors those killed in the May 1980 Gwangju Uprising, a citizens' movement against military dictatorship. Opened in 1997 at the foot of Mudeung Mountain in Buk-gu, Gwangju, it holds the graves of hundreds of victims relocated from the original Mangwol-dong burial ground. With its soaring memorial tower, portrait enshrinement hall, and exhibition center, it is one of South Korea's most significant sacred sites of democracy.
