Nanzen-ji, set at the foot of Kyoto's Higashiyama hills, is the head temple of the Rinzai Nanzen-ji school and ranks among Japan's most prestigious Zen temples. Its sprawling grounds hold a towering ~22m Sanmon gate, a Roman-style brick aqueduct (Suirokaku), and refined dry gardens, all pleasant to explore on foot. The grounds themselves are free; only specific sites such as the Sanmon balcony, the Hojo garden, and Nanzen-in charge admission.
Suirokaku aqueduct: a red-brick Meiji-era canal bridge that carries Lake Biwa water into Kyoto, still active today and the temple's most famous photo spot.
Sanmon gate: built in 1628 and one of Japan's largest wooden gates; for an admission fee you can climb to the upper balcony for city views.
Hojo garden: a karesansui (dry landscape) garden attributed to Kobori Enshu, nicknamed the 'Leaping Tiger' garden for its stone arrangement.
Sub-temples like Tenjuan and Konchi-in: quieter satellite temples with moss-and-maple gardens away from the main crowds.
Autumn foliage: peaks mid-to-late November, when maples framing the aqueduct draw large crowds.

RulesInside the Hojo, photographing the Buddhist statues and fusuma (sliding-door) paintings is prohibited; garden photography is generally allowed.

MannersThe Suirokaku is a working water-supply structure, not just a photo backdrop. When shooting on or around the arches, avoid blocking the walkway for other visitors.

SafetyThe grounds have many stairs and slopes, making wheelchair and stroller access difficult; the Sanmon balcony is reached by a steep staircase, so watch your step.

Grounds and Suirokaku are free; Hojo garden and Sanmon are about ¥600 each, Nanzen-in about ¥500 (confirm current fees and hours).
