🇯🇵 Nakanoshima Beach (Shimojishima)

中の島ビーチ(下地島/カヤッファ) · 일본 오키나와 미야코/시모지

Location

Overview

Nakanoshima Beach — known locally by the Miyako-dialect name 'Kayaffa' — is a natural, cove-shaped snorkeling beach on the southwest coast of Shimojishima, in the Miyako Islands of Okinawa. Because the bay isn't directly exposed to the open sea, the water is often calm, and just a few meters offshore you'll find a reef of table, branching and brain corals alive with clownfish and other colorful tropical fish, earning it the nickname 'natural aquarium.' The gentle shallows run about 1–7 m near shore with excellent clarity (on clear days you can see the seabed at 10 m), making it friendly for first-time snorkelers. As of 2026 it remains an undeveloped spot with no toilets, showers or shops — a quiet, rental-car-access site that stays popular for its untouched reef.

Practical info

From central Miyakojima, drive about 25–30 minutes across the Irabu Bridge; the beach sits near Shimojishima Airport. Free parking holds only 10–15 cars and fills up in peak season. There is no gear rental on site, so borrow your mask, fins and marine shoes in town beforehand and bring drinking water. There are no toilets or showers (the nearest toilet is at Toriike Pond, about 2 km away). Fees and operating conditions change, so confirm the latest details before you go.
