Overview

Mývatn Nature Baths, near Lake Mývatn in northern Iceland, offers the same milky, silica-rich geothermal water as the Blue Lagoon but with far fewer crowds. The water is drawn from geothermal sources linked to the nearby Krafla power plant and kept at 36-40°C. The complex consists of a large open-air lagoon and steam saunas, with views over Lake Mývatn and the surrounding volcanic terrain from the lagoon's edge. Being less visited than the Blue Lagoon, it offers a noticeably calmer experience.

Good to know

SeasonAurora viewing from the lagoon is possible in winter (September-April), but wet hair can freeze quickly on stepping out into the cold air.
SafetyThe silica content can dry out hair and skin, so rinsing off after a long soak is recommended.
·The sulfur smell is similar to the nearby Hverir geothermal field, so be prepared if you're sensitive to it.
RulesShowering with soap before entering is a standard rule at Icelandic hot springs.
