Overview
The Reina Sofía is Spain's national museum of 20th-century and contemporary art in Madrid, best known as the permanent home of Picasso's anti-war masterpiece 'Guernica.' It occupies the former hospital Sabatini Building plus a glass-and-steel extension designed by Jean Nouvel, and together with the Prado and Thyssen it forms Madrid's 'Golden Triangle of Art.' Its collection also spans Spanish modern masters such as Dalí, Miró, and Juan Gris.

RulesThe museum is closed on Tuesdays. It typically opens daily 10:00–21:00, but closes earlier on Sundays (with a free-access afternoon window), so verify current hours on the official site before you go.
RulesThe photography policy in the Guernica room (206) has fluctuated even after the 2023 lifting of the long-standing ban. Flash, tripods and selfie sticks are always prohibited — follow on-site signage and staff instructions.
CautionThe museum sits next to Atocha station, and pickpocketing is common in crowded metro and rail hubs nearby. Wear bags in front and keep them zipped.
MannersDuring free-entry periods (Mon and Wed–Sat 19:00–21:00, and Sunday afternoon) crowds and wait times can be significant. For a relaxed visit, come on a weekday morning.
