Mürren is a car-free mountain village perched on a cliff terrace at about 1,638 m above the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland, famous for its face-to-face panorama of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Timber chalets, view terraces, small shops and mountain hotels line its walkable main promenade, and the village is also the gateway to Schilthorn – Piz Gloria (2,970 m), the revolving-restaurant summit made famous by James Bond. Following the December 2024 opening of the world's steepest cableway (159.4 %) direct from Stechelberg, the entire 'Schilthornbahn 20XX' project was completed in spring 2026, so all five new cableways up to the summit are now running. Buzzing with hikers and via-ferrata climbers in summer and skiers in winter, it rewards an unhurried day trip or an overnight stay.

RulesMürren is strictly car-free. Leave your vehicle in the parking facilities at Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg and continue by cableway and mountain train; if you have large luggage, check the transfer route in advance.
SeasonAt 1,638 m it can feel cold morning and evening even in high summer. Bring a windproof, warm layer and grippy shoes year-round, and note that some cableways and trails close for maintenance around the low season (typically November), so verify operations before you go.
SafetyThe Schilthorn summit sits at 2,970 m, where it is cold and the weather changes fast. The via ferrata requires proper equipment and experience (or a guide), and you should take special care near cliff edges and trail drop-offs when taking photos.
MannersAlpine flowers such as edelweiss and gentian are protected — don't pick them, give way to those climbing on trails, and pack out your rubbish. This is a quiet resort, so keep noise down, and a friendly 'Grüezi' greeting fits right in.
CautionSwitzerland is generally safe, but watch for pickpockets at busy transfer hubs like Interlaken and train stations. Buy cableway tickets only from official counters or apps; restaurant service is included in the bill, so tipping is not obligatory (rounding up is enough).
SafetyPrices are very high, so booking accommodation and popular mountain inns months ahead is wise in peak season. The Schilthorn cableway offers discounts with the Swiss Travel Pass or Berner Oberland Pass, but the covered sections and fares should be checked for the latest details.
Practical info
There are two main ways up: (1) from Lauterbrunnen station take the cableway to Grütschalp and change to the BLM mountain train to Mürren (about 20–25 minutes), or (2) from Stechelberg ride the Schilthornbahn cableway (direct or via Gimmelwald). It is roughly 50 minutes from Interlaken Ost, and the village is open all year, but cableway and train timetables, fares and Swiss Travel Pass coverage should be checked on the official sites before you go.
