Mount Rokko (Rokkosan) is a mountain range stretching northeast of downtown Kobe in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, with a highest peak of about 931 m. Reachable from central Kobe in roughly an hour by cable car and bus, it is celebrated for one of Japan's 'three great night views,' sweeping over Kobe Port and Osaka Bay. SeasonThe summit is about 5-6°C cooler than the city and often windy. Bring a jacket even in midsummer; if you go up in the evening for the night view, the wind chill drops sharply, so pack warm, windproof layers.
SeasonIn winter the wooden decks freeze, so some events are relocated and facilities may run shortened hours or close temporarily. The hilltop bus also switches to a reduced winter timetable — check current operations before you go.
SafetyThe summit gets far more rainfall than the city (about 1,900 mm a year), so it can be rainy or foggy at the top even when it's clear below. Bring rain gear and non-slip footwear if hiking.
SafetyWild boars are frequently seen on the trails. Feeding them is prohibited; boars habituated to food can be aggressive or try to grab your belongings, so keep your distance.
SafetyHiking up from Ashiyagawa and other trailheads instead of taking the cable car can take several hours one way, and mobile reception on the mountain is spotty. If you stay for the night view, confirm the last cable car and hilltop bus times before descending.
