Mount Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) is a granite mountain range in Anhui Province, China, inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage site in 1990. Its 'Four Wonders'—oddly shaped rocks, twisted Huangshan pines, seas of clouds, and hot springs—have inspired classical Chinese landscape painting for centuries. A day trip is possible using the cable cars, but a 2-day/1-night stay in a mountaintop hotel is recommended to catch the sunrise and the sea of clouds without rushing.

SeasonDuring peak periods (May 1 Labor Day holiday, Oct 1 National Day holiday, the July–August school break, and weekends) cable-car queues can exceed 2–3 hours and narrow trails bottleneck badly. Avoid these dates if possible, or arrive before 6:30 a.m.
SeasonWinter is cold—about 3°C by day and freezing at night—but offers rime-covered pines, snowscapes, and frequent seas of clouds; it is also the quietest and cheapest season. Pack warm layers and traction, and check whether cable cars are running.
CautionBuy entrance and cable-car tickets only through official channels (on-site windows or the official online/mini-program). Tickets sold on the street may be fake.
CautionFake-guide scam: a vest-wearer flashes a blurry badge, quotes a day rate, then abandons the group before sunset. Legitimate guides wear a scannable metal/QR badge.
CautionSummit vendors may push crampons and plastic ponchos as 'essential' at inflated prices (e.g., ¥120) that cost far less in town. Bring your own poncho from Tunxi; crampons are only needed after snow in winter.
SafetyTrails are tens of thousands of steep stone steps and narrow cliff paths that turn slippery in fog or rain. Wear grippy shoes, bring spare layers, and carry a waterproof jacket, as weather can change fast.
Practical info
The gateway town is Tunxi (Huangshan City); from Huangshan North high-speed rail station, shuttles and buses run to the scenic area's South Gate and other entrances. Book trains and shuttles 1–2 days ahead (earlier for holidays), and note that WeChat Pay/Alipay are widely accepted. Confirm current fees, operating hours, and peak-season rules before your visit.
