Mount Etna is Europe's tallest active volcano, rising near Catania in eastern Sicily to roughly 3,300–3,400m, a figure that shifts with each summit eruption. SafetyAn eruptive cycle running since Christmas 2025 continued through June–July 2026, with Strombolian explosions and ash repeatedly closing the summit zone. Always check the latest Civil Protection (Protezione Civile) alert level and confirm same-day conditions with your guide before going (verify latest).
RulesUnder 2013 rules, a certified volcano guide is legally required above roughly 2,900m (the summit crater zone). Independent walking is generally allowed only up to about 2,800–2,920m, mainly because of toxic gas hazards (exact limits vary by ordinance — verify latest).
CautionSome sellers claim that hiking to the summit alone is 'forbidden and very dangerous' to push pricey tours, but the ban targets unregistered group excursions, not individual hikes. Note that the cable car + bus + guide package (around €69) usually does NOT include trekking to the main crater — confirm before buying.
CautionAt the Rifugio Sapienza car park, someone may ask for a few euros to 'watch your car' — this is not an official fee. In blue-line bays you must pay at automated machines and keep the parking ticket (unpaid parking has drawn fines).
SeasonAt around 3,000m it is 5–15°C even in summer — 15–20°C colder than sea level — and strong wind chill makes it feel far colder. Bring a windproof jacket, hat, gloves, sturdy trekking shoes with thick soles (sharp lava), sunglasses, sunscreen and water; avoid brand-new boots to prevent blisters.
SafetyAsh emissions can shut Catania Fontanarossa Airport and cause mass flight cancellations and diversions (this happened in July 2026). Build slack into your Sicily itinerary and keep alternatives like Palermo Airport in mind.
Practical info
The AST bus to Rifugio Sapienza leaves Catania's Piazza Giovanni XXIII around 08:15 (round trip about €6.60, ~2 hours each way; buy tickets the day before in peak season). The cable car generally runs 08:30–14:00 but suspends in high wind, cloud or snow. Fares, hours and rules change often — verify the latest on official sites.
