Mount Bromo is an active volcano (about 2,392 m) in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, East Java, Indonesia. It is world-famous for its smoking crater rising from a vast caldera plain known as the 'Sea of Sand,' and for the sunrise views from the Penanjakan and King Kong Hill viewpoints. It is also a sacred site for the Hindu Tengger people.

CautionJeep overcharging is common. Fair rates are roughly Rp 500,000–800,000 per vehicle (shared vs. private varies), but foreigners may be quoted Rp 2–3 million. Ignore 'book now or lose your spot' pressure — you can walk away. Confirm current rates locally.
CautionThere are reports of paying a 'guide' or driver online only for them to vanish, or of no pickup appearing at Probolinggo station/terminal. Never pay 100% up front; use traceable payment (credit card/PayPal) rather than a full bank-transfer deposit.
CautionProbolinggo station and bus terminal are known for touts steering you to agencies where prices jump. Ask to be dropped directly at the Bayuangga terminal or at your booked hotel instead of taking a bemo to a tour office.
SafetyThis is an active volcano. The crater rim is narrow and lacks railings along most of its length — a short railing covers only the first few steps. Stay on marked paths, keep back from the unstable edge.
SafetyVolcanic (sulfur) gas can spike, causing breathing difficulty or irritation, and fumes shift with the wind. Bring a mask, and if authorities enforce an exclusion zone (about 2.5 km) or close the park during high activity, comply fully.
SeasonAt high altitude, pre-dawn temperatures are very cold (roughly 0–10°C, colder with wind chill). Bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves. The dry season (about May–September, best June–September) has the clearest skies for sunrise.
MannersThis is a Tengger sacred site. During the annual Yadnya Kasada ceremony, parts of the temple/crater may be restricted to visitors. Respect Pura Luhur Poten and the rituals; do not disrupt worship and be considerate before photographing.
Practical info
The national park is open 24 hours. Foreign entrance fees run roughly Rp 220,000 on weekdays and Rp 320,000 on weekends/holidays (varies by nationality and day, subject to change). On-the-spot cash is largely replaced by booking via the official portal (bromotenggersemeru.id). Sunrise is around 5:00 AM, so tours typically depart 3–4 AM. Always verify current fees, hours, rules and volcano alerts before visiting.
