Location

Overview

Motoura is a snorkeling cove in the Isso district on Yakushima's north coast, Kagoshima Prefecture β€” tucked in just across the parking lot from Isso Beach, the island's marine-leisure hub. Its rocky shallows shelter colorful reef fish, dense schools of silvery kibinago, and green sea turtles that snorkelers regularly encounter, which is why local dive shops favor it as a beginner training ground. The bay stays shallow at roughly 1–4 m, though the rocky bottom can drop off suddenly in places; July water temperatures run 24–27Β°C with visibility of 10–15 m on a good day. As of July 2026 it's peak season, with Isso Beach's official swimming period (mid-July to late August, lifeguards on duty 9am–5pm) in effect and several shops running lessons and guided snorkel tours.

Practical info

It's about a 15-minute drive from Miyanoura port/airport (or take a bus to the Yahazu stop); park at Isso Beach and walk over. Restrooms and showers are only available during official swimming-season lifeguard hours, and most visitors rent gear or book a lesson through one of the local dive shops. Hours, fees, and booking requirements change, so verify current details before your trip.
